In modern companies, many employees no longer work at a fixed workplace but rather, in the place where the work is. Sales staff make offers directly with their prospective customers. Service providers access relevant data on the move. Others, on the other hand, work from home. They all have one thing in common: they are reliant on the connection to the company's information, which not only needs to be available everywhere but also needs to be secure from the prying eyes of third parties. If a company builds on this flexibility, they will enjoy a competitive advantage against the other participants in the market who do not stay current.

The sales employee is on the way and checks into a hotel for the evening. He would like to prepare a presentation for a customer appointment on the next day. To do this he needs current pricing information from the central goods administration system. Furthermore he also has to answer e-mail queries. The hotel room is not equipped with Internet access. How can the sales employee access the central company network now? And how can he get to internal data? He needs access to the Internet with a temporary but secure connection to the company.

On the next day the sales employee sits at the airport and waits for his return flight. He needs to take part in a telephone conference. Presentations are shown during the conference as well. The mobile employee again needs Internet access and a connection to the communications platform for telephone conferencing.

Looking at this example it becomes clear that the focus of today's working patterns is on mobile communication and fast access to information. Individual IT solutions do not help any more but rather a targeted deployment of comprehensive solutions. To begin with, the practical work processes, the mentality of the employees and the company culture must be analysed. The company's communications profile as well as its information requirements are critical to this process. On the basis of this analysis, mechanisms are created which can optimally support the needs that are presented.

In plain language: which technologies make sense for the company? Which devices should be deployed and which mobile services are needed so that work can be done on the move. The central demand: How can access to the company network be secured so that only authorized personnel have access to internal data? And how can data be uploaded into the company network on the move? This depends on intelligent solutions for replication, administration and protection of data.
